Fishing

The Kokosing river is one of Ohio's premier smallmouth bass streams. These fish are terrific fighters and frequently take to the air when hooked. On a good day, you can catch dozens of fish. Despite the modest size of the Kokosing, some large fish lurk in its waters. Our campers and canoers have caught fish in the 20 inch range -- smallmouth this size will pull a canoe around, or make a wading fisherman work to stay on two feet!

The Kokosing is also home to a good population of rock bass, and many other species of game and pan fish.

Popular lures and bait:

  • Inline spinners such as roostertails

  • Jig and tubes

  • Small spoons

  • Craw-pattern crankbaits

  • Soft craws

  • Hellgramites

WE STRONGLY ENCOURAGE CATCH AND RELEASE FISHING FOR SMALLMOUTH! River smallmouth spend their entire lives fighting the current -- this makes the fish muscular fighting machines, but also causes very slow growth. A twelve inch smallmouth is eight to ten years old, we encourage returning them to the water to breed future generations.

If lake fishing is more your style, Knox Lake and Kokosing Lake are a short drive away. Both offer great fishing for largemouth bass and other species.

Bicycling/Hiking

Check it out! The Kokosing Gap Trail is a paved 14-mile recreational trail built on a former railroad right of way with endpoints at Mt. Vernon and Danville. A prime resting spot is in Gambier, home of Kenyon College. You'll traverse the Kokosing river twice on railroad bridges more than 250 feet long, with forests, wetlands, agriculture and villages along the way. Awesome flora and wildlife make it a great way to commune with nature and shape up at the same time. So don't just talk about it -- make tracks to the trail!

Bird watching

Knox county offers wonderful opportunities for birders, whether casual or hard-core. There are several bald eagle nests in the area. Seeing an eight-foot eagle soaring low over the river is a truly breathtaking sight.

You can also count on spotting great blue herons and other waterfowl on the river.

Golf

Want to go whack the little white ball? There are six courses within 20 minutes of Kokosing Valley. Just ask us for details.
